Why do we need filtered water?

How Does Reverse Osmosis work?
The RO process works by forcing water under pressure through a special synthetic membrane. This membrane has the astounding quality of attracting water molecules and repelling dissolved impurities, even those smaller than the water molecules themselves.
Reverse osmosis purifiers remove all the contaminants of concern to the consumer including bacteria, viruses, parasites, heavy metals, inorganic chemicals, pesticides and algae. Why do we need water softeners?
Hard water contains dissolved minerals such as limestone, iron, sulphur, magnesium and calcium. How Do Water Softeners Work?
A water softener functions on the ion exchange principal in the removal of hardness minerals and certain contaminants from raw water. The equipment contains a bed of softening material known as resin through which the raw, untreated water flows. As the water passes through the resin the hardness minerals attach themselves to this softening material. This ion process, as chemists call it, occurs literally billions of times during the softening process. Eventually so much hardness collects on the resin that the unit can no longer soften water. Regeneration or recharging is now necessary. To recharge it it must be rinsed with a brine solution.
